2019 Season Opening Trip. Departing from Phuket Thailand, a 15 day adventure awaits!

Score the perfect uncrowded barrels that you haven’t been getting at home! The Banyak Islands are one of the last surf frontiers of Indonesia. Just north of Nias, the islands of Bangkaru (Treasure Island) and Tuangku (home of the ‘Bay of Plenty’) hold a number of world-class waves and others waiting to be discovered.

The Seriti is a 25m aluminum crew boat customized for surf charter operations. Sleeping up to 14 passengers in two air-conditioned cabins, The Seriti features a comfortable and spacious air conditioned saloon and huge outdoor deck area to watch all the action in the water. The Seriti also has a full suite of safety equipment including life rafts, life jackets, smoke detectors, EPIRB; CO2 emergency fire system; VHF and SSB radios, satellite telephone, and a 10,000 litre fresh water tank. Uncrowded waves and epic Sumatran sunsets await you, and The Seriti is your ticket.

  • 4th – 19th March, 2019 – 9 spots available

Note, this is a different trip from the usual ‘Seriti’ itinerary. This trip departs from Phuket, Thailand (HKT Airport) on 4th March and finishes in Medan, Indonesia on 19th March (Itinerary below). This trip is also longer than usual, being a total of 15 nights.

Monday 4th March

Guests will be met at HKT airport on arrival and transferred to accommodation in the Chalong area. Enjoy one-night accommodation in the Chalong area of Phuket. Meet Captain Suzuki and step aboard the might Seriti for the first time. Enjoy the food, sights, entertainment and night life that Phuket is renowned for while the crew prepare for departure on Tuesday 5th March.

Tuesday 5th March

All aboard the mighty Seriti for the approx’ 20hr crossing of the Malacca strait. Seas and weather permitting it can be a relaxing cruise from Thailand to Indonesia. You can get to know your surroundings for the next two weeks, kick back, wind down, read a book, watch a movie or just take in the sights while experiencing the journey on the open seas.

Wednesday 6th March

Arrival: Sabang harbour, Banda Aceh

Welcome to Indonesia! For immigration purposes it is necessary to meet all regulations and legal requirements when checking into Indonesia.

*Please note: When sailing abroad the necessary clearance formalities vary from country to country, being extremely simple in some and ridiculously complicated in others. We will prepare to help avoid any complications during these required formalities, but some delays are expected from the authorities in Indonesia through Aceh.

As soon as possible we will gain clearance and head for Lhoknga and the first surf zone of our journey. This NW Indonesian province of Aceh suffered the devastating 2004 ocean floor earthquake and subsequent massive tsunami that both put Aceh on the map.

Unlike the rest of Indonesia, the surf season is Nov-March during the NE monsoon which blows straight offshore to the WSW facing coastline. Banda Aceh’s most known surfing area is around Lhoknga but when aboard the Seriti we have the opportunity to explore the numerous uncharted waves and sights, which the Aceh coastline has to offer.

 Thursday 7th – Saturday 9th or Sunday 10th March

Surf and explore this unique area of North Sumatra, there are 4 notable breaks in the Lhonga area which offer peaking barrels to down the line walls. Further south are more isolated breaks along the mountainous and rocky coastline. Raya Island is steeped in history and is particularly spectacular, in favourable conditions there is a reef on its southern fringe that offers up a long walling right hander. This area is also a great opportunity for snorkelling, fishing or exploring.

Swell and weather conditions pending, your Captain Suzuki will make the call and head south towards Simeulue and the Banyak Island group.

*It is another approx’ 20hr sail from Banda Aceh to the Banyak Islands.

Monday 11th or Tuesday 12 March

Banyak Islands, now on location in this spectacular area, settle in because you have time to enjoy the full Seriti experience. Our Captain and crew will do everything in their power to ensure you get the best waves possible and have all your needs met. Surf breaks like: Treasure Island, Cobra’s and the Turtles. Experience the variety of waves in the Bay of Plenty!

Monday 18th March

Monday afternoon will be your last opportunity for surf, it is time to up anchor and head for Nias. It is a 5hr sail from the Banyaks to Nias where you will spend the night in the port of Lahewa.

Tuesday 19th March

You will be transported by car from Lahewa to Gunungsitoli airport, where you will meet your departing flight from Nias to Medan. (Domestic flight included)

Parked in the North Indian Ocean, long range ground swells travel miles and unload in a tropical paradise full of amazing people, waves for all levels, palms and coconuts aplenty.

Indo has 2 seasons, wet and dry. Dry season has the most consistent winds and larger swells but don’t be fooled, if you know where to look there are amazing waves year round.

Sure wet season can be wet, but so can getting pitted in an uncrowded reef break with your mates. Off season can deliver amazing waves and we are as passionate about this time of year as any.

If you are an absolute charger, then large dry season swells and heaving 8-10 footers at Treasure Island will be your dream. However, if you love hanging with your mates, sinking a few beers, and perfect shoulder to overhead points and reefs then do not count out the shoulder season.

Here’s a guide to the waves which you might get to surf during your trip. Our operators have years of experience and will do their best to ensure that you’re in the right place at the right time. If you’re lucky they might even let you in on some of their secret spots too!

  • Treasure Island
  • Clarets (Lolok Point)
  • Joysticks
  • Cobra’s
  • Turtles
  • Mini’s
  • Lizards Nest
  • Toy Town
  • Babi Island
  • Gorilla’s

At the beginning of your trip, make your way to Phuket, Thailand (HKT). At the end of your trip, you will fly out from Medan, Indonesia (KNO)
